Overview

Out Boulder County, now known as Rocky Mountain Equality, selected Comprise to design the organization’s 2023 Annual Report. Previous Out Boulder County annual reports featured a diverse array of designs and layouts highlighting its accomplishments from the year prior. The community-based nonprofit organization tasked Comprise with crafting a fresh, modern look that emphasized clean lines and ample white space, resulting in a cohesive and visually engaging report that effectively communicated its message without going overboard on the soon-to-be-changing branding.

Our Work

The project began with establishing the theme, “It’s Up to Us,” which embodies Out Boulder County’s commitment to shaping the future, supporting the local LGBTQ+ community and ensuring Boulder is safe and welcoming for everyone. Guided by this theme, we created preliminary layout concepts showcasing various illustration styles and a range of handwritten fonts. The second round of theme ideas focused more on a community vibe, moving away from the hand-drawn feel and using more live photography.

We also worked with the OBC team to determine likes and dislikes from previous editions and compile comprehensive information, including mission and value statements, letters from team members, detailed initiatives, data, statistics, events, volunteer recognition and communication strategies for the 2023 edition.

Once the report’s framework was established, we turned our attention to the design and layout. We aimed for a clean design that heavily utilized warm, friendly and vibrant colors, photography, iconography and data call-outs to enhance readability and engagement. This approach creates a visually appealing and engaging report by balancing clean design with vibrant elements.

The final product showcased a well-organized layout with cohesive branding, dynamic visuals and informative infographics that not only resonated with the organization’s community but effectively conveyed the organization’s key theme. Our design team selected typography for optimal readability and strategically employed white space to improve consistency, enhance the overall design and draw readers’ eyes to important information throughout the report. Our efforts helped transform complicated concepts into easy-to-understand graphics and provided visually engaging sections on the stories of individuals OBC helped.

The 54-page report successfully crafted a human-centered experience by incorporating personal letters, emphasizing inclusivity and community involvement and developing a narrative that effectively communicated the organization’s mission, achievements and impact over the previous year.
